In 1833 Menzel received a commission from the Berlin art dealer and publisher, Louis Sachse, to illustrate Goethe’s dramatic sketch Künstlers Erdenwallen of 1744. The eleven images, paired in the first five lithographs, depict stages in the life of an artist from his childhood through adulthood to posthumous fame. The set launched Menzel’s career and he himself referred to it as his first artistic production.

The linear discipline of Menzel’s draftsmanship found a favorable reception with Johann Gottfried Schadow, the director of the Berlin Academy and probably the most influential artistic figure in Berlin at the time. Schadow helped the nineteen-year-old Menzel gain admission to the Berlin Association of Young Artists in 1834.
