GIOVANNI BATTISTA PIRANESI

1720 Mogliano - Rome 1778

title-page for Carceri d’Invenzione 1749 etching Hind 1; Robison 29 first state (of nine); first edition, first issue A fine, luminous impression in excellent, untreated condition; with the usual centre fold and wide margins all round. The first three states described by Robison all belong to the three issues of the first edition of the set, before Piranesi extensively reworked the plates for the second edition, published from 1761 onward. The present first state belongs to the first issue. Here, the name of the Roman publisher Giovanni Bouchard is misspelled as “Bouzard,” an error that would be corrected in the second state (respectively from the second issue of the first edition onward).
