Shortly before photography took over the centuries-old role of prints as reproductions or, better, translations of artworks, the burin engraving experienced an astonishing last flourishing during the course of the nineteenth century. In the prints from this period all the technical acumen the medium had accumulated over the previous four hundred years is on display for one last time.
